Issos

Issos – The Golden Strip Between Two Seas

Issos is one of the most unique and spectacular destinations in Corfu, a natural wonder that leaves all visitors speechless. Located in the southern part of the island, it consists of an impressive strip of golden sand approximately 3 kilometers long that separates the Ionian Sea from the Korission Lagoon. This rare natural phenomenon was created by the accumulation of sand and marine sediments over thousands of years, forming a natural isthmus that connects the beach to the mainland. This unique landscape offers visitors the incredible experience of being simultaneously between two completely different aquatic environments.

The beach of Issos is distinguished by its vast expanse of golden sand and the crystal-clear waters that surround it on both sides. On one side lies the open Ionian Sea with its deep blue waters and stronger waves that provide ideal conditions for water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, while on the other side extends the Korission Lagoon with its calm, shallow waters that are ideal for families with small children. The lagoon is also an important wetland that hosts numerous species of migratory birds and constitutes a protected area of the Natura 2000 network.

Beyond its natural beauty, Issos offers a variety of activities and experiences for every type of visitor. Nature lovers can explore the lagoon trails for bird watching and photograph the unique flora of the area, while sports enthusiasts can test their skills in water sports. The beach features beach bars and tavernas serving fresh seafood and local specialties, while the sunset from Issos is considered one of the most spectacular in Corfu, as the sun dips into the Ionian creating a magical reflection that extends across the entire sand strip. Issos constitutes an essential destination for those who want to experience something unique in nature and admire one of the rarest geological phenomena in the Mediterranean.
